Introduction
I’m a drummer/student from The East Midlands in the UK and have been playing drums for eleven years. For the last few years I have been working as a drum tutor for children, teaching at beginner and intermediate levels.
As well as teaching I play in multiple bands, and most recently in a local musical production. I am able to teach you anything you need to know to Grade 8 level, in a multitude of genres. This includes reading, technique, rudiments, songs, beats, fills - you name it!
Check out some of the videos here and on my social media, and don't hesitate to contact me for any advice or lessons.
Every journey begins with one small step...
Teaching
I like to teach based on the interests of the student, beginning with the basics of drumming, how to keep time, play a beat etc. and expand in the direction that most appeals to the student, be it more fills, more beats, different genres or different techniques.
I will always encourage the student to explore their own style of drumming, as well as practice along to songs and backing tracks that they enjoy listening to. I have found through my drumming experience that I learn better playing music that I would usually listen to and enjoy, and my aim would be to provide that same experience for the student.
Biography
I grew up in a normal family home in East Sussex and was only five years old when my brother got his first electronic drum set. I was an annoying sibling, so what did I do? I played it. Eventually, I decided to invest in my newfound talent (!), spending five pounds at a primary school fair to buy my first real drum set, of course it was plastic, but who cares, right?
Drums are drums. I played this plastic kit surrounded by boxes and pans for two years, until I got a junior drum set for my eighth birthday and started taking lessons. Skip ahead another year and I was in the school talent show, covering Van Halen’s Jump on my friend’s full-size drum set, I won first place.
When I was ten, I got a full size drum set and played it until I was 13, towards the end of owning this ,it was when I began teaching my friend’s brother, who ended up buying my kit when I spent all my savings on a Mapex Armoury drum set which I still have today.
At 14 I became a music scholar at my school, and started getting invited to multiple bands, playing school concerts and local festivals with my friends and in a production of Legally Blonde. Continuing to teach two other boys, one who drums for Eva Rose, I was now making a living from teaching kids how to play drums. But then… the pandemic. No more lessons. No more students. This is why I’ve decided to start this website, to give aspiring drummers the chance to take online lessons with me, and not just from some vague tutorial on the internet.
As a grade eight drummer now studying Music Technology, I’ve had many influences growing up. Mainly Neil Peart (Rush), Jay Weinberg (Slipknot), Roger Taylor (Queen), Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Jimmy Sullivan (Avenged Sevenfold) and countless others.
My drumming focus has always been primarily on rock and metal, however playing in a community jazz band as well as a school big band and concert band have taught me how to explore drumming in a multitude of styles, I’m always looking for new things to learn, constantly exploring new realms of drumming, most recently trying to tackle Dream Theatre music. Because I’ve taken this attitude towards drumming, it means that I am up for teaching anything you want me to teach you, be it pop, metal, jazz, EDM, it doesn’t matter!
